THE NEED
Henry and Frances Zittrower were vacationing on a cruise and one of the Port-of-Calls was Roatan, Honduras. While many passengers headed straight for the tourist areas, Henry and Frances asked a cab driver to show them the “the real” Honduras lifestyle. What they found was extreme poverty accompanied by filthy living conditions and an unhealthy community both physically and spiritually. The Holy Spirit spoke to Henry and Frances and instilled in them a passion for the people they saw. Henry and Frances felt the Lord calling them to help the Roatan people with their physical and spiritual needs. One of the biggest obstacles Hondurans face is unclean water. Many people are living with parasites in their bodies and are constantly sick due to the contaminated drinking water. New wells need to be drilled. Additionally, a new water filtration system is desperately needed to supply the community with clean, healthy water. Ms. Peggy, Director of Clinic of Hope that provides the people with health care, stated that clean water would reduce her patients by 50%. By meeting this health need, the people of Roatan will open their minds and spirits to the Word of God.

MONEY MATTERS
The Honduran currency is the Lempira, and it has a value of about 18.9 Lempiras to one US dollar as of February 2008. Dollars are usually accepted in souvenir shops and hotels. Smaller denominations are preferable. You must be very careful about Lempira to USA Dollar exchange.
Women will want to use a purse with a strong shoulder strap and not wear flashy or expensive jewelry. We strongly recommend that you leave all jewelry with sentimental value at home.
NEVER LEAVE IMPORTANT ITEMS LYING AROUND AS THEY MAY DISAPPEAR. PLEAE KEEP UP WITH CAMERAS ESPECIALLY—MANY FREQUENTLY ARE LEFT AT THE DINNER TABLE.

Be careful what you say in English as some of the Islanders understand English.

Do not give money or gifts to individuals, gifts should be coordinated through Team Leader.
-
Please be careful giving out candy, gum, and other favors, which could create small crises. This will spread quickly throughout the village and you will have more people than candy, etc…

Although you will be working hard on mission critical activities during your trip at the site, there will be some available down time (at the direction and planning of your mission team’s trip coordinator). ABOVE ALL ELSE, BRING:
FLEXIBILITY
HUMILITY
UNITY
